The Data Access Portal has information in 3 columns. An outline of the content in these columns is provided above. When first entering the search interface, all potential datasets are listed. Datasets are indicated in the map and results tabulation elements which are located in the middle column. The order of results can be modified using the "Sort by" option in the left column. On top of this column is normally relevant guidance information to user presented as collapsible elements.
If the user want to refine the search, this can be done by constraining the bounding box search. This is done in the map - the listing of datasets is automatically updated. Date constraints can be added in the left column. For these to take effect, the user has to push the button marked search. In the left column it is also possible to specific text elements to search for in the datasets. Again pushing the button marked "Search" is necessary for these to take action. Complex search patterns can be constructed by changing the operators used in the text field and prefixing words with '+' and '-' to indicate whether they have to be present or should not be present in the results.
Other elements indicated in the left and right columns are facet searches, i.e. these are keywords that are found in the datasets and all datasets that contain these specific keywords in the appropriate metadata elements are listed together. Further refinement can be done using full text, date or bounding box constraints. Individuals, organisations and data centres involved in generating or curating the datasets are listed in the facets in the right column.

Abstract:
We present two new gridded bathymetric compilations of the Orkney Passage, Scotia Sea here defined by the following bounding boxes: 39.1 to 39.6 W, 60.55 to 60.7 S and 41.7 to 42.6 W, 60.45 to 60.8 S.
These bathymetry grids were compiled from a variety of multibeam swath bathymetry data acquired during 12 different cruises (see lineage). The data is available as grids of 50 m resolution in a GMT-compatible (2-D) NetCDF format using geographic coordinates on the WGS84 datum.
This grid was compiled in support of the ongoing monitoring efforts in and around Orkney Passage as part of the Ocean Regulation of Climate by Heat and Carbon Sequestration and Transports (ORCHESTRA) programme and preceding BAS NC projects, and the Dynamics of the Orkney Passage Outflow (DynOPO) project.

Abstract:
This dataset includes ~3,000 line km of radio-echo sounding data along the English Coast of western Palmer Land in the Antarctic Peninsula. Data was acquired by the British Antarctic Survey Polarimetric-radar Airborne Science Instrument (PASIN2) ice sounding radar system in the austral summer of 2016/2017. Radar lines collected at ~3-5 km line spacing transect a number of outlet glacier flows, close to the grounding line, where continental ice begins to float.
Data were funded by a BAS National Capability grant.

Abstract:
This is distributed temperature sensing (DTS) data from a 1,043 m borehole drilled to the base of Sermeq Kujalleq (Store Glacier), Greenland, 28 km inland from the glacier terminus. The DTS system was installed on 5 July 2019, with recordings continuing until cable failure on 13 August 2019. The record resolution is ~0.65 m.

Abstract:
Ground penetrating radar (GPR) data were acquired at a site on Antarctica''s Larsen C Ice Shelf, in November 2017. The acquisition was performed to measure radar anisotropy, a potential proxy for the stress condition in the upper ice shelf, following the calving of Iceberg A68 in July 2017. Two GPR common midpoint (CMP) gathers were acquired at Site S2, a site previously surveyed during the NERC funded NE/E013414/1 SOLIS project. These gathers were acquired first with GPR antennas extended in the flow-parallel direction (~ east), and then in the flow-orthogonal direction. The GPR system is a Sensors & Software pulseEKKO PRO, with 200 MHZ antennas. All acquisitions were performed by Dr Jim White (British Geological Survey) and Emma Pearce (University of Leeds, School of Earth and Environment), with support from BAS.
The data is part of the NERC RACE project, NE/R012334/1.

This dataset contains plant trait measurements for nine plant functional traits (specific leaf area, vegetative height, reproductive height, seed mass, leaf dry matter content, wood density, leaf area, leaf fresh mass, leaf dry mass) collected in situ from tundra plant communities at three sites in the Yukon Territory, Canada. The three sites (Kluane Platueau (60.96 degN, 138.41 degW), Pika Camp (61.22 degN, 138.28 degW), Qikiqtaruk-Herschel Island (69.57 degN, 138.90 degW)) were visited annually from 2014-2017.

This dataset contains rates of mass change and cumulative mass change and their associated uncertainty for the Antarctic Ice Sheet (in its entirety and split into West Antarctica, East Antarctica and the Antarctic Peninsula), the Greenland Ice Sheet, and their sum between 1992 and 2020. The data are reconciled estimates of mass balance from three independent satellite-based techniques: altimetry, gravimetry and input-output method. This dataset is part of the Ice Sheet Mass Balance Intercomparison Exercise (IMBIE).
This work is an outcome of the Ice Sheet Mass Balance Inter-Comparison Exercise IMBIE) supported by the ESA Climate Change Initiative and the NASA Cryosphere Program. Long-range airborne geophysical measurements were carried out in the ICEGRAV campaigns (2010-2013), covering hitherto unexplored parts of interior East Antarctica and part of the Antarctic Peninsula. The airborne surveys provided a regional coverage of gravity, magnetic and ice-penetrating radar measurements for major Dronning Maud Land ice stream systems, from the grounding lines up to the Recovery Lakes drainage basin, and filled in major data voids in Antarctic data compilations.We present here the processed line aerogravity data collected using a LaCoste & Romberg air-sea gravity meter S83 mounted in the BAS aerogeophysically equipped Twin Otter aircraft.

The colony size and breeding success of Gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) on Goudier Island, monitored annually 1996 - 2020. The data presented here includes the number of breeding pairs, the number of chicks that hatched from their eggs (approximately the mid-point in the annual breeding season) and the number of chicks present in creches at defined sub-colonies prior to fledging.

Genetic variation on a spatial scale was assessed, using both DNA fingerprinting and sequencing-based approaches, in the Antarctic endemics Buellia frigida, Carbonia vorticosa and Amandinea petermananii, and in the bipolar species Caloplaca saxicola, Umbilicaria decussata and Cladonia galindezii. PCR-based (Polymerase Chain Reaction) molecular biology techniques, were used as they are ideal for working with lichens because little starting material is required. See Fabian et al. 2007 for further information on analyses and results.

Whole island counts of the number of active nests of South Georgia shag Leucocarbo [atriceps] georgianus on Bird Island. Counts were first made in 1989-1990. A repeat count was made in 1994-95 and from 2012-13 onwards active nests have been counted either biennially or annually.

A dataset of acclimation potential of terrestrial, freshwater and marine ectotherms across latitudes collected from the literature spanning the time period 1960 to 2015 with the aim to test the importance of physiological acclimation as a mechanism to buffer species against climate warming.
The projected rate of environmental warming is used to calculate how many years and generations acclimation capacity will afford each species before it will exceed its thermal maximum. Acclimation capacity, generation time, latitudinal range extent and projected rate of warming are then combined into an index of vulnerability. This data together with critical thermal maxima of the ectotherms are presented here.

Two netcdf files are provided that contain daily precipitation amounts for January 1979 - July 2017 from the RACMO version 3p2 limited area, atmosphere-only model. The model is described in van Wessem, J. M., C. H. Reijmer, M. Morlighem, J. Mouginot, E. Rignot, B. Medley, and E. van Meijgaard, (2014) Improved representation of East Antarctic surface mass balance in a regional atmospheric climate model, Journal of Glaciology, 60, 761-770. The model was run over a 262 by 240 grid point domain covering Antarctica and parts of the Southern Ocean. The model was forced at the lateral boundaries by data from the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF) Interim reanalysis (ERA-Interim). Flags are provided for extreme precipitation events. A precipitation day was taken as a daily total of precipitation of greater than 0.02 mm. Extreme precipitation events were then taken as days when daily precipitation amount was greater than the 90th percentile of the daily precipitation values over the period 1979 - 2016.
