Radiation measurements made during the spring 2008 cruise to the Fram Strait. Transmission of light through ice, measured by divers on day 4 of fifth floe. At fourth site, approx. 20 m from ice edge, 0.42 m snow on 1.04 m ice. Each measurement type (incident, reflected, etc) was made with a different TriOS Ramses spectroradiometer. These are known to have calibration issues at the longest and shortest wavelengths for which data are reported; we recommend using only data from about 350 to 920 nm. No significant quality control has been done to these data.

Abstract:
Radiation measurements made during the spring 2008 cruise to the Fram Strait. Albedo of sea ice with thin snow cover on days 1-3 of seventh floe. About 0.008 m snow on about 1.4 m ice. Surface in area was smooth and gray, with ice clearly visible through the snow. Weather varied during logging, but was generally overcast on days 1 and 3, with some breaks in the clouds on day 2. Each measurement type (incident, reflected, etc) was made with a different TriOS Ramses spectroradiometer. These are known to have calibration issues at the longest and shortest wavelengths for which data are reported; we recommend using only data from about 350 to 920 nm. Abstract:
Radiation measurements made during the spring 2008 cruise to the Fram Strait. Albedo and transmission of ice on day 2 of sixth floe. First measured transmission under the ice at the same location as 06-B3, with under-ice sensor in rack hanging through borehole. Only incoming and transmitted data for this period. Measurements with transmitted sensor at different depths, increasing from 2.4 to 0.75 m in 15-cm steps. Smooth surface, about 0.05 m snow on about 1.6 m ice. During data gap, snow was cleared from a large area around the hole, then albedo and transmittance were measured for the snow-free ice. After data gap, transmission (through snow-free ice) was measured at 3 depths: 2.6, 1.4, and 0.9 m. Overcast stratus, with passing fog, occasional weak shadows. Each measurement type (incident, reflected, etc) was made with a different TriOS Ramses spectroradiometer. These are known to have calibration issues at the longest and shortest wavelengths for which data are reported; we recommend using only data from about 350 to 920 nm.
